Feds Look Into Fluoride’s Adverse Brain Effects
The US National Toxicology Program (NTP) plans to review
hundreds of studies linking fluoride to adverse brain effects. The report won’t
be finalized until 2018 and may signal an end to the fluoridation program
nation-wide, reports the New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc.
(NYSCOF)
“It’s careless to put your
constituents in harm’s way when important safety studies have yet to be done,”
says attorney Paul Beeber, President NYSCOF.
According to attorney Michael
Connett, Fluoride Action Network (FAN) Executive Director, "FAN has identified 314
studies that have investigated fluoride’s effects on the brain and nervous
system. This includes 181 animal
studies, 112 human
studies, and 21 cell
studies,
The majority of these studies were
published after the 2006 National Research Council’s fluoride toxicology report
concluded, "It is apparent
that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the
brain."
Responding to the NTPs
information request, FAN summarized the latest research in its letter, writing: “Since proponents of fluoridation like to
claim that
fluoride only reduces IQ at enormously high doses, we made sure to draw NTPs
attention to 23 studies where IQ reductions were found at levels at, or below,
EPA's current ‘safe’ drinking water level (4 ppm) for fluoride, with a few
studies even finding IQ loss at the so-called ‘optimal’ levels that are added to
water for fluoridation.”
“FAN's submission included a
great deal of other information which every legislators should read before
starting or continuing water fluoridation, for constituent safety,” says
Beeber. Our children are already fluoride-overdosed. Connett reveals “The rates of fluorosis have continued to rise since the early 2000s, as evident by the CDC’s 2011-2012 NHANES survey, which found that 57% of adolescents now have the condition, with a staggering 21% of adolescents displaying moderate fluorosis on at least two teeth, up from 2% in 1999-2004 Severe fluorosis has also increased, from < 1% to 2%.”
Dental fluorosis is white spotted, yellow, brown and/or pitted teeth which occurs when children consume too much fluoride while their teeth are forming.
The NTP was established in 1978 to develop cutting-edge scientific tools to investigate "concerns about the human health effects of chemical agents in our environment." The NTP was created because "Many human diseases were thought to be directly or indirectly related to chemical exposures; therefore, it was thought that decreasing or eliminating human exposures to those chemicals would help prevent some human disease and disability."
On December 2, NTP's Board of
Scientific Counselors held a hearing in which it considered the proposed
fluoride/brain study Videotape is
here.
At the hearing, Dr. Kristina
Thayer, of NTP's Office of Health Assessment and Translation (OHAT), outlined
the studies that NTP seeks to conduct on fluoride. These studies include (1) a
systematic
review of the
existing research on fluoride's developmental neurotoxicity, including human,
animal, and cellular studies, and (2) NTP's own animal experiments that will be
conducted to clarify fluoride's effects on learning and memory and the doses
that cause these effects. END
