ADA.org: ADA News: Growth in dental spending continues to outpace economic growth:

"Washington -- Americans spent a record $70.3 billion for dental care in 2002, the Bush administration said Jan. 8 in the annual government report on National Health Expenditures.
The rate of growth in dental spending continues to outpace total economic growth, according to Department of Health and Human Services actuaries tracking trends in the health economy"

"However, Brunelle & Carlos looked at a more sensitive measure of tooth decay - they looked at Decayed Missing and Filled SURFACES (DMFS). There are 128 tooth surfaces in a child's mouth. (16 teeth with 5 surfaces and 12 (6 front top and bottom) with 4 surfaces = 80 48 = 128.)

For children (aged 5 - 17 years) who lived all their lives in fluoridated (number of children= 8165) or non-fluoridated communities (number of children = 8233) Brunelle and Carlos found an average difference of 0.6 tooth surfaces, i.e. this is less than 1% of the tooth surfaces"

The estimated contract value including all charges and taxes for the period January 1, 2004 toDecember 31, 2004 is $483,844.91. Water and Wastewater Division 2004 Preliminary OperatingBudget will commit to the provision of funds in the amount of $589,836.00 (net after GST rebate)within the Water Supply Production Appropriation, pending final approval by the City Council.The options to renew will result in an additional estimated cost, including all charges and taxes of$483,844.91 for 2005 and $506,191.32 for 2006. The total estimated funds for the three-year periodis $1,473,881.14 including all charges and taxes

The council also learned the city is getting a $9,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Health for a new fluoridation feeder system for its water treatment plant
